COVINGTON — St. Paul’s battled all the way to the end against one of the top teams in the state, but came up just short in its Division I playoff series.
The seventh-seeded Wolves took on No. 2 Catholic – Baton Rouge in a best-of-three quarterfinals series, and the local team ended up dropping a three-game thriller. St. Paul’s suffered a 5-4, 11-inning loss in the opener, was victorious in Game 2, 5-4, and lost the series finale, 8-5.
Catholic advances to the semifinals where it will meet Holy Cross on Thursday.
The Wolves close out their season with a 20-11 record while Catholic improves to 27-7.
In the first game of the series, the Bears capitalized on a bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning to emerge with the one-run victory.
St. Paul’s, however, rebounded in Game 2 by scoring two runs in the sixth inning to capture the narrow one-run victory.
In the series finale, the Wolves jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, but the Bears erupted for three runs in the second inning and added four more in the fourth to take control of the game.
