Motorcyclist dies in La. 36 crash

COVINGTON — A crash on La. 36 last week claimed the life of Covington’s Domario Rodricous Smith, Louisiana State Police Troop L reported.
Just before 6 a.m. last Thursday, Smith was riding a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle westbound on LA 36 while 52-year-old Honora Kennedy Richard of Covington was driving a 2006 Toyota Avalon eastbound on LA 36, according to the initial investigation.
Richard attempted to turn left from LA 36 onto Opelousas Street, and as she turned, she crossed into the westbound lane of LA 36 and into the path of Smith’s motorcycle, State Troop L reported. The motorcycle crashed into the passenger side of the Avalon. Despite wearing a helmet, Smith sustained severe injuries in the crash, and he was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital, where he later died due to his injuries.
Richard was properly restrained and sustained minor injuries in the crash, the news release stated. She submitted to a voluntary breath test, which showed no trace amount of alcohol present.
Impairment is presently not suspected to have been a contributing factor, and as part of the on-going investigation, blood samples were collected and will be analyzed by the Coroner’s Office.
