Free concert set for Mandeville on June 13

MANDEVILLE — The Crescent River Big Band, featuring Cherie Mannino on vocals and spotlighting guest appearances by several St. Tammany middle and high school music students, will perform free at the Mandeville Trailhead Cultural Interpretive Center on June 13.
The event is part of the annual musical instrument donation drive of the Frank J. Mannino Music Education Fund.
The big band concert, beginning at 6:30 p.m., is being sponsored by the Friends of the Dew Drop.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the Trailhead.
Formed by musician and band leader Milo Mannino, husband of Cherie Mannino and son of Frank J. Mannino, the big band will feature arrangements from the musical catalogs of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder and even Sesame Street’s Kermit the Frog.
The concert event is two-fold. Through donations, area music teachers and professional musicians — many of whom are regulars with the big band –hope to raise funds for the purchase of musical instruments for northshore musical students. With the assistance of the teachers, students annually apply to the Mannino Fund indicating the type of instrument they need and as funds become available, the Fund secures the designated instrument and gets it to the student.
Those attending the concert are asked to bring and donate used band instruments which will be renovated by Tom Barbry’s Instrument Repair and Lanier Music near Mandeville. When refurbished, those instruments will be donated to various northshore schools for their band programs. Milo Mannino states that anyone wishing to do so can drop off a used instrument at Laneir Music on Louisiana 59 before the concert. He also said that those bringing the instrument to the concert will receive a free CD of the Crescent River Big Band featuring Cherie Mannino on vocals.
This is the fourth year that the annual Mannino Fund concert and instrument donation drive has been sponsored by the Friends of the Dew Drop.
