MANDEVILLE — Chris Faler knew he wanted his profession to be in the medical field.
The owner of Premier Chiropractic in Mandeville since 2008, Faler credits a life-altering event for helping him to choose his professional direction.
“Most chiropractors have a story,” he said. “For me, it was a back injury. I was riding a horse and the horse got away from me. I spun out of control and fell to the ground. After the accident, I started having severe migraines in addition to the back discomfort. Fortunately enough I was able to recover.
“A local chiropractor helped me a lot,” he continued. “It inspired me and I went on to chiropractic school. I was able to find a specific technique I now practice in order to help people.”
Faler is a specialized chiropractor who is one of two doctors in the state of Louisiana to perform National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA). NUCCA is a specialized treatment which makes corrections to the body from the top of the spine as opposed to traditional chiropractic care in which the patient experiences twisting or turning of the head, neck and back.
“Honestly, patients who walk through our doors are experiencing symptoms which nobody else really can help,” he said. “It can be severe migraines, TMJ or issues with the jaw or chronic issues of vertigo and dizziness. It’s not my arm, back or neck hurts kind of symptoms most of the time.”
Not having to be a practicing physician with regular hours each day, the Mandeville native Faler enjoys making his own schedule to be able to spend more time with his family and his second passion which is bow fishing.
“Even before I had the injury falling off the horse, I had experienced a back injury lifting boxes,” he said. “I had a chiropractor help me through it and I started asking him questions and became really interested in the field. I was amazed he was able to treat me without medicine.
“So we started talking and he answered a lot of questions for me,” he said. “It got me hooked and I knew what I wanted to do. I get the chance to help people and because I set my own hours I get to spend a lot more time with my family than most doctors. It is the best of both worlds.”
A lifelong resident of the Northshore who graduated from Mandeville High School, Faler said he couldn’t imagine his life any other way.
“In today’s world in the medical profession, there is a lot of pressure,” he said. “The industry is intense and it is affecting many doctors. For me, minimizing those things means more time with my family. We still get to help people and I still get to make a living, but without the hassles which come along with it. That comes with the flexibility I get with being a chiropractor. It is something so much more rewarding than I ever thought it would be.
“At first I was concerned working in my hometown because you know everybody,” he continued. “But now I really couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. South Louisiana is my home and I feel extremely blessed to be here.”
For more information about spinal health, Faler has also written a book titled “Your Spine, Your Health, Your Choices: Guiding Your Pathway to Wellness.”
